Cefuroxime Axetil - LAXIME-500

DESCRIPTION

Cefuroxime axetil tablets USP contain cefuroxime as cefuroxime axetil. Cefuroxime axetil is a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration.

Chemically, cefuroxime axetil, the 1-(acetyloxy) ethyl ester of cefuroxime, is (RS)-1-hydroxyethyl (6R,7R)-7-[2-(2-furyl)glyoxyl-amido]-3-(hydroxymethyl)-8-oxo-5-thia-1- azabicyclo[4.2.0]-oct-2-ene-2-carboxylate, 72-(Z)-(O-methyl-oxime), 1-acetate 3-carbamate. Its molecular formula is C20H22N4O10S, and it has a molecular weight of 510.48.

Cefuroxime tablets USP tablets are film-coated and contain the equivalent of 250 or 500 mg of cefuroxime as cefuroxime axetil. Cefuroxime axetil tablets USP also contain the following inactive ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hydrogenated vegetable oil, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc and titanium dioxide.

INDICATION

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibacterial used in the treatment of susceptible infections. These have included bone and joints infections, bronchitis ( and other lower respiratory-tract infections), gonorroea, meningitis (although treatment failures have been reported in H. influenza meningitis), otitis media,peritonitis, pharyngitis,sinusitis, skin infections (including soft-tissue infections), and unrinary-tract infections. It is also used for surgical infection prophylaxis.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Usual oral doses for adults are 125mg twice daily for uncomplicated urinary-tract infections and 250mg to 500mg twice daily for respiratory-tract infections. A dose for children more than 3 months of age is 125mg twice daily or 10mg/kg twice daily to a maximum of 250mg daily. Children over 2 years of age with otitis media may be given 250mg twice daily or 15mg/kg twice daily to a maximum 500mg daily.

DRUG INTERACTION

Probenecid reduces the renal clearance of Cefuroxime

ADVERSE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS

Gastrointestinal disturbances, Including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, have occurred in some patients receiving cefuroxime axetil. There have been rate reports of erythema multiforme Steven-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Mild to moderate hearing loss has been reported in some children given cefuroxime for the treatment of meningitis.
